One end of China’s human right action

Six Network articles, a personal capacity voluntarily signed the "Charter 08", two hours hasty trial (both prosecution and the defense have no more than 14 minutes to speak), they are all evidence to sent Liu Xiaobo to jail for 11 years. The adjudge was announced on the same day Christmas eve, on an independent writer, intellectual, Liu Xiaobo was sentenced to heavy penalty.

Chinese government uses Liu as a target, jailed him with proposes of warning to others. On one hand, the government continues to warn that the deal with Europe, the United States and Australia and other Western countries. On another hand, which is more important, they are target for warning other human rights defenders, push them gives up the rights of freedom of speech.

On the 2008 "World Human Rights Day", Liu Xiaobo was taken away from his home. A whole year, the Chinese government deals vigilantly with a series of politically sensitive date, deals with all kinds of economic uncertainty, well-prepared themselves a special appearance as a powerful country on the world stage. At the same time, for Xi Jinping, Bo Xilai and other princelings, it represented the next generation of CPC leadership succession forging a new discourse of the ruling.

The core of my view is not focus on the repression gangdom, but it provide an evidence of identification difference between "government official " and "citizen". In these government official’s eyes, citizen like Liu xiaobo equals to gangdom, equals to the group of people which threat social security.

Charter 08

After Liu Xiaobo has been prosecuted, many people who signed the "Charter 08" stand up and say that we sinned as him. It is because they see the point: Liu Xiaobo, for people all in the present and future may be conflict with the official, government, bears the suffering himself.

The "Charter 08" is not long, but the contents of complex, each person may have different understandings. The Charter is different from the previously groups movement. There are no protests or conflicts. It is a document of requirement from the people. It is not committed to format a group or organization, but stressed that the dignity of citizenship, calling for the independence of the individual citizen commitment.

Nowadays, gap between rich and poor in Chinese society leads to frequent intensification of social conflict situations. Suggestions for the Government from experts and scholars are keeping starting warning. It is widely argued that if the problem is not dealt with, it would be threat to social stability. That problem is not resolved, could cause unrest.

Mass incidents

Although the total number of mass incidents is not decreasing, the number of repression by government police has significantly increased. In every year, provinces and cities have plenty of the events that people’s strong opinions were viciously repressed. After period of Beijing Olympic Games, more instructions show that repression of mass incidents is going to be a daily work for future.
Liu Xiaobo tries hardly to exercise his rights, and so did Tan Zuoren and Ai Weiwei who collected the truth of the shabby work in the Sichuan province. These are the provisions in the Constitution of the PRC to protect civil rights. However, Liu was sentenced to jail, not only hurt those who efforts to promote universal values of foreign persons and Western countries, but also living in China, every citizen. In order to protect citizens themselves in the future when the conflict happens between the official and government, there is no law or Constitution of the PRC protects them. China's people need Liu Xiaobo to restore freedom.

Glad to back home against heavy snowing

When our plane landed on the London Gatwick Airport, all passengers on broad applauded for the successful landed and our captain.

The thick snow on the ground outside the window make me realized I left Africa, left sunshine and beach, backed to the snow world. At the same time, I began to glad that I changed my mind at last minute and decided to go Africa instead of Skiing in Europe for Christmas vacation.

Whole journey backs to London, I was experiencing some turbulence and made me believe the reality of snowing attack in Europe.

EasyJet's Twitter site called for calm from passengers: "We do not intend to make anyone angry we are trying our best to assist." Another post said: "You may not get an answer immediately we are snowed under, excuse the pun!" Ryanair said 35 flights had been delayed, with the major delays taking place at Stansted. Now I could calm down.

After we arrived, the Gatwick airport was almost empty. Few passengers stay at the airport for someone picks them up to home. I could not find lot passengers were waiting for plane. It could be seem that the airport has learned for experiences that how to solved travel chaos caused by bad weather.

However, the Europe does not feel the same lucky. More than 80 people have died across Europe as days of snow storms and sub-zero temperatures swept the continent, causing traffic chaos for millions. At least 42 people have frozen to death in Poland over the last three days and another 27 in Ukraine. Another 13 people died in car accidents in Austria, Finland and Germany, where temperatures fell to -33C (-27F).

British Airways cancelled all European and UK domestic flights leaving Heathrow after seven o’clock 21 December. Channel Tunnel services remain badly affected after Eurotunnel closed its car shuttle service to new passengers.

Opposite the cold weather, we still could feel the warm in these frozen days, a restaurant owner offered tens of thousands of homeless people a hot meal in Krakow's main square. "The food is not the only important thing," restaurateur Janusz Kosciuszko was quoted as telling Euronews. "What is also important is that these people know that someone is thinking about them."

Hope everyone could find a warm to spend this winter!

Time honors the 'Chinese worker'

In China, they are known as nongmingong, meaning "farmers-turned-workers", a term that likely means more in Chinese than it does in English. And now this important segment of the Chinese workforce have come to world prominence, thanks to Time magazine naming them runners-up to Ben Bernanke in its latest Person of the Year awards.

While the US Federal Reserve chairman scooped the top honor, the fact that the nongmingong were singled out shows their importance on the global stage.

Leaving behind families and homes to migrate to China's cities, they take on largely manual work and are among the country's lowest-paid workers. They often go about their work in relative obscurity, despite numbering around 200 million. But while the nongmingong will garner a good deal of attention, Bernanke will be on the cover of the magazine, in recognition of his maneuvering of US monetary policy that helped steer the world's largest economy out of the financial crisis.Chinese workers ranked second were the only group named. The magazine described them as "an increasingly influential group in one of the world's most powerful economies."

This year, China's year-on-year gross domestic product (GDP) growth is set to exceed 8 percent. The growth rate means it will contribute about 20 percent of this year's global economic growth, Cheng Siwei, former vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, said last month.

Analysts said the country's nongmingong were an important part of the economic miracle in recent years. "This group will have a great bearing on China's future development," said Chen Gong, chief economist and chairman of Anbound Group, a Beijing-based consulting firm.

"More importantly, they are linking the cities and the rural areas, playing a role in bridging the gap between the two," he said. The important role of migrant workers in the Chinese economy, however, accentuates the fact that China still relies on low-technology manufacturing to support its economic development, said Zhong Jiyin, an economist with the Institute of Economics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS).

Monitor critique (4): Copenhagen Conference

The Copenhagen summit is closed in a remarkable chaos and controversy. This is, at least in parts of the world media and public evaluation of the results of the summit, then there would be slightly different as seen.
British media considered that the summit failed to reach the basic legally binding treaty is a complete failure, and the responsibility of failure is due to China.
U.S. media mainly focus on the president Obama and the Secretary of State Clinton turn the international climate talks pushed to a "new era" at a critical moment.
Mainly the Chinese media, Premier Wen Jiabao intervention is to promote the "Copenhagen agreement" reached the key.
Asia, Africa, Europe, rest of American and other national media coverage have different focuses.

The UK

Britain's mainstream media generally agreed that the Copenhagen summit is a complete failure and that the main reason for the failure is China's "stonewalling."
British Energy Minister Ed Miliband publicly accused China "veto" a number of mitigation proposals during the summit, leading to the summit into a "chaotic" situation.
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has told the media that some developing countries "kidnapped" climate summit.
Only a small number of people in theUK suspect global warming caused by human activities, scholars in the media commented that the results of the summit is not a bad thing now.

Europe

Germany and France media seem to be less intense denounced the outcome of the summit than the British media.
Many German media report dissatisfaction on the final agreement is clearly ignored the views of the European countries.
In accusing the United States, China and other big polluters failed to fulfill their duties at the same time, many analysts pointed out that the United States, China, India and other powerful countries sign a climate agreement is already a big step forward .
While the French media considered that the summit results do not generally satisfactory, but it seems the French commentators take more "gun" to the current plummeting public support for President Nicolas Sarkozy.
"Le Monde" published a review article pointed out that the whole summit, Sarkozy has consistently demonstrated outstanding during the period. President ignores the co-ordination with other European countries.

American

Except European media, the United States and Canada, the media reaction to the summit is relatively mild, and some even "positive."
U.S. and Canadian media both reported that suspected "man-made climate change”. There is also reported the results of many scholars believe that the fact is "not so bad," "should look at the next" information.
South American powerful country Brazil's media are mainly focused on the summit demonstrated a new pattern of world politics further.
Brazilian media have reported that the countries which signed the Copenhagen Agreement not only include U.S., China, there are also India, Brazil, Indonesia and even the Sudan and other countries.
In addition, the Brazilian media is also generally agreed that the although results of the summit unsatisfactory, but is not a complete failure.

Asia and Africa

Most media in Asian countries responds to the summit is also relatively mild
While some Japanese media reported the summit matters, they focus on the summit during the negotiation process between China and the US-led "new world order."
Indonesian media reports questioned why Indonesia, the so-called "big country" is out during the summit, or even "was abandoned in the side"?
The Caribbean island Grenada media reports that the leaders of great powers unwilling to make "difficult decisions" and therefore the final answer is compromise.

Free condom as a gift

Copenhagen summit has started. In order to reduce carbon footprints during the trip, the "green" representative racked our brains for an answer. Some early days, don't go by plane or by bike, but in Denmark. This means of transport, comes from China, India and Africa, lest be unrealistic. Therefore, there is distinguished guest guarantee money to develop clean energy or trees to erase his project, the carbon footprints.

Don't you know? It is a new way to make carbon compensation. That is to buy a box of condom to a poor women of child-bearing age, let them have fewer children than emissions!

"Accidental pregnancy in 80m people"

This is not joke. It is the ideal of the British population think-tank "population trust fund" to put the Copenhagen summit "unprecedented, radical sex" carbon compensation method.

Offsetting Carbon offset (few) refers to the people to calculate daily activities of yourself, and Carbon dioxide emissions of tonnage offset these greenhouse gases needed economic cost, then donating money special enterprise or institution, the organization and emission reduction projects.
Last week, the ideal population trust fund new carbon, encourage rich countries compensation, donation in poor countries, the birth control measures to control population growth, slow global warming.

The popular, said the summer vacation to fly in the Caribbean, or open a four-wheel drive to buy a newspaper, guilt, donate some money. Charity organization took the money to persuade, to help countries of the third world women have fewer children.

The foundation of family planning, global warming is the most effective means of unit cost. Their research suggests that, in the birth of each input on four pounds, can reduce a ton of carbon dioxide emissions. And achieve the same reduction, planting cost is £8, wind, solar and is £15 pounds, hybrid cars technology is 56 pounds.

In the foundation of PopOffsets website, has a striking slogan: "the man! = emissions rapid population growth is the global warming is a major factor"! On a calculator website, help you calculate how much their emissions of carbon dioxide, the action to offset the carbon dioxide you need for developing countries to donate money to how contraception. For example, flew from London to Sydney, equal and 10 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, therefore, to donate 40 pounds, or Indian women help Kenyans have fewer children, can erase their carbon footprints.

The Funds said, never forced women contraception, not sponsor abortion, but to help control 80 million people each year against "accidental pregnancy."

Distraction?

Recently, this means in Britain carbon offset not often questioned. Recently, the British provides the Travel company carbon offset flights of responsibility ", "will no longer make had announced carbon offset. Company founder gus, Francis (Francis Justin, said the carbon compensation as "people" and "magic", want to be able to jail, don't change their behavior. Want to fly on the fly, you want to do, and comfort. In fact, everyone needs reduction, compensation, it will make the reduction of "distraction.

The poor, is also the most susceptible to the effects of climate change, any form of helping the poor response to climate change, welcome the funds. However, if the rich countries under the guise of compensation in carbon emissions, it's hard to convince people in poor countries give children the choice of poverty and dreams.

No wonder, the dispute between rich and poor nations, development and reduction of copenhagan between rival, replace the Kyoto protocol a summit of a major obstacle to international conventions.

Who should have fewer children than emissions? Is the developed countries of the middle? The third world is the poor? Do you think?

10 Top News in China 2009

1. 60th anniversary of the founding of New China

Looking at China's history over the past 60 years, it is apparent that, despite much suffering, the country has achieved huge political, economic and social success, especially during the past three decades.

A grand parade in Beijing on Oct 1, led by the People's Liberation Army and the People's Armed Police Force, showcased some of China's latest achievements in defense modernization. About 8,000 military officers, along with tanks and other vehicles, formed columns stretching 3 km.

The military parade was followed by a civilian procession featuring six massive performing groups and 36 formations of about 100,000 people. In addition, 60 floats represented everything from the country's geographic areas to last year's Beijing Olympics.

Everyday life in China is a parade on a grander scale, with citizens now able to enjoy things their ancestors did not dare contemplate 100 years ago, things their grandparents took for luxury 60 years ago, and things their parents did not even know how to attempt 30 years ago.

2. Barack Obama's historic visit to China

Barack Obama became the first United States president to visit China in his first year of taking office when he arrived in Shanghai on Nov 15 as part of his first Asia tour.

During one of his trademark town hall-style meetings with youths at the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum on Nov 16, the 48-year-old president reiterated that the US does not seek to contain China's rise and welcomes China as a "strong, prosperous and successful member of the community of nations".

After the speech, Obama departed for Beijing, where he spent two days in talks with President Hu Jintao, National People's Congress Standing Committee (NPC) Chairman Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao.

China and the US signed a joint statement on Nov 17 highlighting joint efforts to combat climate change and promote the clean energy industry. The countries also reiterated a commitment to building a "positive, cooperative and comprehensive relationship in the 21st century".

Obama capped his four-day visit with a trip to the Great Wall in northern Beijing on Nov 18.

3. Climate change

Leaders from about 100 nations, along with thousands of negotiators from almost 200, flocked to Copenhagen, capital of Denmark, for the United Nation's 12-day climate change conference on Dec 7. The talks were intended to seal a deal on the fight against global warming after the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012.

Premier Wen Jiabao arrived on Dec 16 to join world leaders for the crucial last two days of negotiations, during which he told US President Barack Obama climate change is a global challenge, as well as an important field for cooperation between China and the US. The key to this issue is to stick to the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities", said Wen.

The Chinese premier said his country has always regarded addressing climate change as an important strategic task and that, between 1990 and 2005, China's carbon dioxide emissions per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) were reduced by 46 percent. "Building on that, we have set a new target of cutting carbon intensity by 40 to 45 percent on the 2005 level by 2020," Wen told delegates.

The conference ended on Dec 19 with the Copenhagen Accord. Although the document was not legally binding, it firmly upheld the basic framework and principles established by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Kyoto Protocol.

4. July 5 riots in Xinjiang

The violence that broke out in Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, on July 5 left 197 people dead and more than 1,700 injured.

Rioters gathered in downtown streets at 8 pm and began beating pedestrians, vandalizing cars and buses, and looting shops. The mayhem quickly spread to other areas. Most of those killed or injured were ethnic Han Chinese, while most of the rioters were Uygurs armed with bricks and batons.

Chinese authorities accused Rebiya Kadeer, leader of the World Uygur Congress who lives in exile in the US, of orchestrating the violence by using mobile phone text messaging and social networking websites. The central government blocked access to the Internet in Xinjiang just 24 hours after the violence, and its Web service to this day remains restricted.

Police asked the local procuratorate to approve the arrests of 575 suspected rioters. The authority granted 430 and, so far, 22 people have been sentenced to death for murder and other crimes during or after the July 5 riot.

5. H1N1 flu

Since the first confirmed case of H1N1 flu on the Chinese mainland on May 11, there have been 326 reported deaths from the virus, which quickly spread across the globe after initial reports in Mexico.

Pregnant women make up almost 14 percent of the victims of H1N1 on the Chinese mainland, while men account for 58 percent, according to official figures. About 90 of the 326 H1N1 deaths were reported between Dec 14 and 20, said Ministry of Health officials. During that period, 6,129 cases were reported.

A vaccine developed in China was approved on Sept 3 and, as of Dec 21, more than 40 million people had been inoculated nationwide.

The Chinese government planned to vaccinate 65 million - 5 percent of the country's population - before the end of 2009. Health workers, public service workers and students are priority groups for the vaccine.

6. Adoption of the Food Safety Law

China's top legislature, the NPC Standing Committee, approved the Food Safety Law on Feb 28, providing a legal basis for the government to strengthen control "from the production line to the dining table".

The law, implemented on June 1, enhanced monitoring and supervision, and toughened safety standards. It stipulated substandard products must be recalled and promised severe punishments for rule-breakers.

All chemicals and materials not on the list of authorized additives were banned from food production, with the new regulations insisting "only items proved to be safe and necessary are allowed to be listed as food additives".

The NPC Standing Committee gave the nod to the hotly debated draft law following a spate of food scandals triggered vehement calls for an overhaul of China's monitoring system.

Winning 158 from 165 votes, the rules said the State Council would set up a State-level food safety commission to oversee the entire food monitoring system, which due to a lack of efficiency has long been blamed for repeated scandals.

7. China's 8-percent growth rate

The nation's economy grew by just 9 percent this year, the lowest in seven years, which experts blamed on the global financial crisis. It brought to an end a five-year streak of double-digit expansion.

China has been under great pressure to realise 8-percent growth - the target announced by Premier Wen Jiabao in March - as the government has long believed it essential to the populous developing nation.

A massive economic stimulus package featuring a two-year investment plan worth 4 trillion yuan ($586 billion) was implemented in the first quarter. It was originally adopted in November 2008, shortly after the start of the world economic slowdown, along with more pro-growth economic policies such as expanding the "home appliances to the countryside" program.

Official figures show GDP grew 8.9 percent in the third quarter, accelerating from 7.9 percent in the second and 6.1 percent in the first. For the first three quarters, the annualized GDP growth reached 7.7 percent.

8. PLA Navy takes on Somali pirates

China launched its first overseas military mission since 1949 on Dec 26, 2008, when it sent its first fleet of People's Liberation Army warships to the coast of Africa to protect merchant vessels from Somali pirates.

Leaving from Sanya port, Hainan province, they traveled more than 4,500 nautical miles and arrived on Jan 6. By the time they were relieved by the second fleet on April 2 , the Haikou, Wuhan and Weishanhu had escorted 130 vessels, as well as rescued three foreign merchant ships from pirates, according to statistics from the Ministry of Transport.

The mission has included more than 3,300 troops, while figures show the PLA Navy has in 12 months of operations escorted 1,300 merchant vessels, including 405 foreign ships and 18 from Taiwan province.

Four batches of destroyers and frigates have so far been deployed to the Gulf of Aden.

9. Forced demolitions

When Tang Fuzhen was told her home in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, was in the way of a highway project and would be demolished, she doused herself in petrol and set fire to herself in protest on Nov 13.

That same month, the media also highlighted the case of a woman in Minhang district, Shanghai, who threw petrol bombs at a demolition crew outside her home in June last year. Officials planned to raze the building to make way for a transportation hub for the 2010 Shanghai Expo.

Both "nail houses" - a term used to describe when people refuse to move out of homes slated for demolition - shocked citizens across China and turned the spotlight onto the rights of homeowners and forced demolitions by local governments. The central government announced on Dec 7 it would look into the issue of housing demolition regulations.

The most famous "nail house" case was in Chongqing in 2007 when a couple stopped developers from demolishing their home for three years until they received suitable compensation.

10. Disneyland in Shanghai

Construction of a Disneyland on the east bank of Huangpu River in Shanghai finally got the green light on Nov 4. The theme park will cost an estimated 25 billion yuan ($3.6 billion) and will open its gates as early as 2014. It is expected to cover an area of 116 hectares, 10 hectares fewer than the Disneyland in Hong Kong.

Walt Disney Co. will reportedly take a 43-percent equity stake in Shanghai Disneyland, while a joint-venture holding company formed by a consortium of Chinese companies owned by the municipal government will own the majority 57 percent.

The park will be the fourth Disneyland outside of the US - the others are in Paris, Tokyo and Hong Kong - and is one of the largest-ever foreign investments in China's mainland.

Hotest Album in this week: Susan Boyle' s dream

The 48-year-old Britain's Got Talent runner-up shifted more than 130,000 copies of her debut album as it went on sale on Monday. Experts at the Official Charts Company said it is now set to become one of the fastest sellers of the decade.

I Dreamed A Dream looks to be on track to vie for the accolade of having this year's biggest first week sale, a record held by JLS for their self-titled which sold over 230,000 copies earlier this month.
It also includes the standard Cry Me a River, as well as covers of Madonna's You'll See and The Monkees' Daydream Believer.

Boyle's album last week achieved the largest ever pre-order for online retailer Amazon. She said: ''It was my greatest ambition to release an album and I have finally achieved it. There is happiness out there for everyone who dares to dream.''

Boyle launched her album with a performance on The X Factor on Sunday during which she sang her version of The Rolling Stones song Wild Horses. A huge crowd watched the performance seven months after her sensational debut on Britain's Got Talent.

Miss Boyle said: "I've grown up a bit. I've become more of a lady. I don't swivel my hips as much, you know? It feels very surreal, as if it's not really happening." She said: "That was a statement I was trying to make, because I was bullied a lot at school - 'You may have done that to me when I was younger, but you can't do it to me anymore. I'm grown up now'." She added: "From no pressure to having all this pressure, I found it a bit suffocating. It was such a short space of time, it felt like a demolition ball really. It really came at me like a demolition ball.

The things which mattered to me before 'Britain's Got Talent,' they still matter to me now: my faith, my friends, family. I'm not so cooped up now; I'm part of the world."

How to Travel? —— written before Christma

Before go travel, about places, you do a bit of understanding and open up a list of must-see spots, or without any information and expectations, just depend on intuition or the wizard's guide to experience?

All different characters, different motives to travel, it is no matter good or bad, right or wrong. If you just want to find a comfortable environment to forget fatigue, resolve troubles, bask, eat a meal, and I still wish you happy. Sometimes I was such a mentality.

Tourists and those who travel

However, when I traveled alone in the age of 20, I was not so much charitable spirit.

I had classified the travelers into two categories: tourists and traveler. Tourists seek ease and comfort, with the burden of their material and cultural sunglasses flying and air-conditioning coaches go into other people's habitat space, live in star hotel themselves isolation with the locals, then walk away and leave after bought a couple of souvenirs.

Traveler is not, bumps in the crowded long-distance buses with the local farmers and construction workers, eats in a food stalls or find a shop. The accommodation is also simple.

Contact

I think that the tourism and travel is not really incompatible, but also feel appeal about the health and comfort. But in each place, we should try to talk to some local people, to evade international chain coffee shops or fast-food shops, as well as those tourist hotels which local residents isolated from.

Wherever she went up communication and contact with people is the travel writer Jan • Morris claims. She wrote a lot travel literature over the past half a century, in the just published "contact ", she talked decade’s experience of contact with the various characters.

Morris claims do not like travel literature, at least do not like those who give a guiding navigation books, her books never tell the reader what can be seen in one place, because she said that everyone will see different things.

What she likes to read is what she likes to write. It is a place for the author's feelings.

Severial rules

Now 83-year-old Morris said in a radio interview in order to immerge in wherever she go, she sets a few rules for herself.

One of the rules is based on writer Foster (EM Forster, 1879 - 1970). When he talked approach about how to understand the City of Alexandria, Egypt. That is "no target stroll."

Secondly, she said she was also in accordance with "the Bible • Psalms," which exhorted herself, "like a dog, open your mouth, smiled and walked in the city," to seek good returns from locals.

Flavor

Morris latest book is a text but all fine language and concise description. It is usually long as a half-page or whole page or short as three lines or five lines. Each of the articles only takes account of just one person she met, one thing, or one thought in mind.

For example, talking about his hat with an Australian child, discussing with a Dutch man anout the situation in the country, or one thought when watched a performance in Chinese Children's Palace.

There is an article write about the feeling generated when the native people watched her in mangrove swamps in Fiji. She felt as if she was swallowed by their eyes, and associated the place used to be a cannibalism place.

It initially feared her, but ultimately the felling was: "Actually, to be eaten in Fiji, I would not mind too much. Their pot will be placed on a variety of spices, they will slowly cooked with small fire and the whole occasion is certainly very happy. "

Travel Art

Morris obviously played a bit of imagination here, which is what I read from time to time over the past few years, “The Art of Travel”, the author strongly advocated for.

Philosopher Alain (Alain de Botton) analysis the people’s expectations before the trip in this book (in fact, is also largely of himself), as well as people's curiosity and the pursuit of the exotic, and "the art of opening eyes" and "the owner of a beauty."

The article referred to public securities, "there are still many outstanding issues and weaknesses that need to be solved urgently." Meng Jianzhu urged public security departments, "to deepen the public security information technology, law enforcement standardized construction, the building of a harmonious community relations."

Did not reach the real reason

In an interview with BBC China web interview, Beijing Independent political commentator Peng Dingding said Meng Jianzhu assessed the situation in line with China's actual conditions, but he did not touch on the real reasons that affect social stability.

He said, "are stereotyped, how to close to the people, how to do law enforcement, but in China's current system, the police are under the leadership of the party, who is the Government's tools."

In enhancing public relations problem, Peng Dingding says, "Since the beginning of 2008 has been emerged large-scale mass incidents, the public security departments should used the police with caution and do not abuse, firmly do not do what do not have to do, but it is not possible because the command right of the public security departments at the local government, funds are allocated by the government."

Internet

Meng Jianzhu mentioned in the article, the Internet has become the "the Internet has become an important means for the anti-China forces to infiltration and sabotage, magnify the destruction."

Peng Dingding said, "the government has realized the important of Internet. For a long time, the rule relied on blockading the news, it may be easier to carry out the guidance of public opinion. The Internet has such a tremendous destructive impacted the pattern."

He said, "China has extended through the Internet to achieve freedom of expression."

Peng Dingding considered that the article is worthiness because it noted that authorities want to publish authoritative information: "From Lhasa, 3 • 14 incident to Xinjiang 7 • 5 incidents, the Administration's approach has a more obvious transition. It is more open to the media in the events."

Meng Jianzhu acknowledged in the article about the people's legal rights awareness, significantly enhanced, public opinion, social supervision, an unprecedented increased, which put the public securities forward to new requirements for law enforcement activities, Peng Dingding think this shows that the authorities are helpless.

He said, "People have a sense of safeguarding rights, it is difficult as it has done with the government and the police authority to command the masses."

Credibility

The awakening of public awareness of their rights also forced the public security departments in dealing with issues of conflict and contradiction to make concessions.

Peng Dingding says, "I have seen many times, the public security department, said the pliable words: Everyone go away, do not give us trouble, the situation we understand, find the relevant departments to resolve the things. But we say these words are useless, without any practical value. The problems the public security departments are now facing, are their own can not be solved."

In commenting on the article, he said, "the article did not mention the substance of the problem. If not cure, but to curb the symptoms, are useless."

Only if the fundamental political system has changed, it will be possible satisfaction of the people. The party lead to the Government and the judiciary, has no right checks and balances, it is not credible."

He said, "this article, in my interpretation, that is to say, the Chinese public security authorities admitted: We have no method."

A girl with Journalism Ideality

October 2009, a new term started as usual in the University of Westminster. However in this is a quiet and small come from China dream to start her journalist career in the university. Her name is Anli Wang.

Anli is come from Anhui province. It is not an economic centre as Shanghang or Hongkong, neither like the political capital Beijing. It is the place where is on the top 10 list of population, and also centre with mixed culture. The story around Anli is the real life story. She knows how hard a farmer family is to feed up a graduate. She knows how hard it is for the people from poor country site to find a job and a room to live in a middle size city.

Not a normal Girl

Dreamed to be a journalist, Anli do not want to report the topical news of domestic or international. Anli Wang is a very normal girl, if you don’t her deeply, you could not understand how could be a little person with such a strong spirit with her career.

She prefer to do deep report, to find the story behind, to investigate the secret which was not published to the mass. She said, “I like the feel that I could close to people, to know them, to see their real life, and then I could help them.”

The change of career

However, the final dream is really hard to achieve. The bachelor background of Anli is Chinese. It has nothing related to journalism. However, Anli started her dream of Journalist since her study in Chinese. When she was a high school student, she started reading Lu Xun, who is one of the greatest writers in China. She likes his critical essays because they are telling the true China. They were waking Chinese up during the World War II. Although it is a peaceful period, people are still feeling the painful of the social. Those kinds of news are the report that Anli want to do.

It is destiny

Hold the ‘same’ dream as Lu Xun, Anli gave up her writer dream and become to a freelance writer. The hardest time of her is the period her preparing the exam for a graduate study in the University. The lack of background knowledge, the language problem, pushes Anli to give up time to time. However, today Anli recruited in the University of Westminster. To reach the success, it is because the power of her dreams, and also the spirit of her insistence.

At last, she said “to start the class here, it is just a star, the road to her dream is still long. But I will never give up, it is because that is what I love and it is my destiny.”

China's new tackling climate change target

There are two weeks distances a global summit on climate change in Copenhagen. And today China has unveiled its first firm target for limiting greenhouse gas emissions. The target would aim to reduce its "carbon intensity" by 40-45% by the year 2020, compared with 2005 levels.
Carbon intensity is china’s preferred measurement. It is to count the amount of carbon dioxide emitted for each unit of GDP. However, now it is hard to say the new target will reduce China's overall levels of carbon dioxide. It is because the economy in china is still growing and polluting coal remains to be the mostly fuel. The target also reveals China wants to play a leading role in tackling global climate change. In addition, China government said Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao would attend the talks in Copenhagen.

Cut down number of buses against Oxford St congestion

Christmas is in the offing. Shopping streets are bustling with people. However, retailers on Oxford Street have called for a reduction in the number of buses traveling through it everyday.

There are 24 bus routes sending more than 220 buses an hour along Oxford Street and Regent Street. Besides of the retailers, the Westminster Council has received complaints from customers too about excessive traffic congestion. The TFL is acting upon the Westminster council's suggestions, the shoppers on Oxford Street seem to be worried.

As the Westminster Council said, millions of pounds have already been spent on improving the area. And here is yet another step in the direction, aimed at further improving the shopping experience of the visitors.

In order to provide a better shopping experience, the transport for London has decided to reduce the number of buses by 10% by the end of the year, and another 10% by the end of next year, after recommendation of Westminster Council.

China product promotes via new ad

China, the country that introduced the world to formerly obscure chemicals like melamine and diethylene glycol via a series of product safety scandals, is now hoping to salvage its image through an advertising campaign.

The 30-second ads, played initially on CNN, show images of MP3 players printed with "Made in China with software from Silicon Valley," and clothes labeled "Made in China with French designers."
A jaunty soundtrack plays over happy Westerners jogging, eating, dancing, posing for a fashion shoot and looking out an aircraft window at a "Made in China, with engineers from all over the world" aircraft engine.

It ends with an American-accented voice saying: "When it says Made-in-China, it really means 'Made-in-China, Made with the world'."

The "charm offensive" is designed to promote Chinese-made goods "in a fair and objective way," to tell overseas consumers "that Chinese companies work with overseas firms to produce quality products," the official English-language China Daily said.

The campaign "reflects the Chinese companies' attitude and aspiration of strengthening cooperation with other countries to provide quality goods for foreign consumers," it added.

China, often called the world's factory, is struggling to convince a skeptical global audience that it has won a battle to improve safety standards after recent scandals involving everything from pet food and dumplings to children's toys.

The issue has proven a huge irritant in ties between China and the United States and European Union, the country's largest trade partners. But Beijing insists it is getting tough after endless promises to crack down.

What is Green Dam for?

Computer software companies and International Internet constrain “freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.” A software, which is pushed to be installed on computer by China’s government, gives a good sample of blinding netizen’s eyes.

China demanded that until July 1, 2009, all personal computers sold in the country, must be shipped pre-installed software named Green Dam, in order to prevent access of pornographic websites. The government also urged the international PC makers, which sell computers in China, should also pre-install the software on computers. Green Dam is a new kind of anti- pornography software. It aims to make efforts to protect 'young people from harmful web contents.

However, cases had been shown that the software was not only block pornographic websites, but also sensitive political words. “In the 3.17 version, language processing turns on blocking for political and religious content by killing browser tabs and applications and even other user applications like notepad. The kill action is triggered by entering a particular URL into the location bar or window of the browser.” Following pornographic websites, some legal websites were blocked too. This ‘additional function’ is far away from the purpose of software be used. Meanwhile, consumers were not informed of that function and some information was filtered. Netizen is deprived of freedom of gaining information. That is against Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The second violation is that the software keeps monitoring personal communications and Internet browsing behaviour of users. The software “actively monitors individual computer behavior, such that a wide range of programs including word processing and email can be suddenly terminated if content algorithm detects inappropriate speech.” The fact of monitoring of users behaviour refers to violation human rights. Either article written by users or email are belongs personal privacy. They should be protected by national law. According Constitution of the People’s Republic of China Article 40, the freedom and privacy of correspondence of citizens of the People's Republic of China are protected by law government treated this new software in a special way. It probably duo to monitoring and filtering forbidden words and event are of benefits to the government.

As an enforcement act, all computer companies have to install Green Dam. However, the cost of the software will be shared by companies. It could be seem no companies would like to add this part of cost on themselves. They would probably shift the cost to consumers. The government has paid 41.7million RMB (approximately 3.79million GBP) for develop Green Dam. Although government announced that Green Dam is free for consumers, who will pick up the tab for government? It might be either computer producer or consumers. For the more, the consumers have no choice to buy a computer without Green Dam software.

The feedback of consumers leans to rescind the announcement. Local media and netizen published thousands of articles to accuse the government of violation of human rights. At the end of Green Dam controversy, the government have to abolish the announcement. Although it could be count to success of human rights, there is still no one to accuse the huge payment of software developing.

True stroy about twitter you probably do no know.

Web security SaaS company Purewire evaluated the profiles of millions of Twitter users to show the depth of a new tool it has created called Tweet Grade. While the tool itself is not unlike numerous other Twitter grading services, the company has uncovered some very interesting user statistics.

It seems as though far less people are actually using and contributing to the site than Twitter's recent hype and massive growth would suggest. In fact, the data shows that a large percentage of Twitter users have not "tweeted" since the first day they joined the service and at least a quarter of its users don't have any followers at all. This is what it found:

First, many Twitter users "have abandoned their accounts shortly after creating them, and a significant percentage are not showing signs of account activity". 40 percent of Twitter users have not tweeted since their first day on Twitter (i.e., the account was most likely created and subsequently forgotten about).

Approximately 25 percent of Twitter users are not following anyone, while two-thirds are following less than 10 people (i.e., the account was created but is not actually being used regularly).

Second, the data shows that "Twitter is used more as a mass medium for receiving information, rather than as a way to interact with others. Proof is shown by evaluating the followers and friends of Twitter users".

More than 1/3 of Twitter users have not posted a single tweet, and almost 80 percent of the users have less than 10 tweets (i.e., while Twitter is billed as a great collaboration tool, a large number of users are there to consume content, not distribute it).

Approximately 30 percent of Twitter users do not have any followers, and 80 percent of Twitter users have less than 10 followers (i.e., for many users, their posts are not being widely tracked or read).
50 percent of Twitter users are following more people than they have as followers, and another 30 percent of Twitter users are following the same number of people that are following them (i.e. users are aggressively trying to attract followers by hoping they will "follow back" but have been unsuccessful).
There are bound to be folks trying out different Web apps that won't end up using them, we do it all the time.

I still think Twitter has become a valuable mainstream communication platform and its usage will continue to evolve and grow.

US President Barack Obama visits China for the first time

President Obama will visit Shanghai and Beijing November 15–18 to meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao and Prime Minister Wen Jiabao. While in China, Obama hopes to emphasize the importance of the U.S.-Chinese relationship and build trust between the two nations. He arrived in Shanghai on Sunday, and then flew into Beijing late on Monday.

Obama told President Hu Jintao that more people-to-people exchanges between the U.S. and China would lead to greater cooperation on economic and security issues.

Obama said at a meeting of senior government officials in Beijing's Great Hall of the People that the American people were interested in stronger relations with the people of China.

"The more that we can encourage people to people exchanges that are consistent with the discussions that we're having at the government level, the more that China and the United States will be able to work cooperatively on a whole range of issues -- both economic issues, security issues and global issues -- that are in the interests not just of our two nations, but the entire world," said Obama.

He told Hu that the smaller group discussions between the two leaders before the formal talks were very constructive.

"As we both affirmed, the United States and China have a great many mutual interests, and after 30 years of bilateral relations, I think it's fair to say that our two governments have continued to move forward in a way that can bring even greater cooperation in the future," Obama said.

"We hope the US understand and support China's government's stance and concerns, properly manage the Taiwan issue, and disallow any 'pro-Tibet independence' and 'the East Turkistan' forces to commit to any moves on the American soil to separate China," Hu said.

The East Turkistan has long sought to separate Xinjiang from China.

Obama stressed that the US recognizes and respects China' sovereignty and territorial integrity on Taiwan and other issues.

He said Washington is not intent to interrupt China's core interests.

Obama reiterated that the US follows its one-China policy and abides by the principles of the three Sino-US joint communiqués. Washington's one-China policy is solid and lasting, he added.

Obama also said Tibet is part of China.

"We did note that while we recognize that Tibet is part of the People's Republic of China," Obama said at a Joint Statement with Hu. "The United States supports the early resumption of dialogue between the Chinese government and representatives of the Dalai Lama to resolve any concerns and differences that the two sides may have."

Apart from enhancing the strategic mutual trust, Hu suggested both countries keep close high-level exchanges and dialogues on all other issues.

At Obama's invitation, Hu will visit the US in next year.

Hu also called for more bilateral cooperation to jointly deal with "all sorts of" regional and global challenges.

Obama also said international cooperation is necessary for the world to face all global challenges.

He said the current US government, which is quite different from its predecessors in foreign policy, supports dialogues between nations and multilateralism.

The US goes not seek to contain China, as it welcomes a strong, prosperous, and successful China with bigger role in international affairs. He said the US appreciates China's effort to help resolve the nuclear issues of Iran and the Korean Peninsula.

The 21st century is different the 20th century, Obama said. Inter-state relations should not be a "zero-sum game" and countries should move beyond the "Cold War mentality".

Obama, 48, is the first US president who started a state visit to China within the first year since taking office.

After meeting Hu, Obama visited the Forbidden City.

Obama will meet with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday and visit the Great Wall in the afternoon.

His team will then leave for the Republic of Korea.

The rising travel fares in london

The world’s most expensive city will increase travel fares in 2010.

The cost of a single central London tube journey will rise from £1.60 to £1.80 on Oyster. The bus journey will rise from £1.00 to £1.20.

Boris Johnson, the mayor of London, announced that he would make this decision later this year. The fare rise will impact the London Underground and the expanded bus network.

The fares have been rising during the past decade. Although the Oyster card cut the price down, the average cost of travel in London is higher than others in Europe.

According to research done by London's Liberal Democrats, ”London's cash single fare is over two and a half times that of Tokyo, the next most expensive city, and almost three times the price of the European average, £4.00 compared with £1.37.”

The mayor defended the sharp rise is going to help plug a multimillion-pound hole in transport funding in the capital.

Johnson wrote for the Evening Standard "We are coping with the colossal costs of the failure of Metronet and the disastrous PPP, and we are dealing with the costs of years of irresponsible politically motivated jiggery-pokery in setting fares”.

Johnson also said, "Nobody wants to make an announcement like this, especially when Londoners are feeling the effects of the recession,"

Researching the recent years’ figures about the London transport fares. It is easy to find out last year Johnson had announced an inflation-busting 6% rise in tube and bus fares from 2009.

The comments from Londoners show their about the rising fares. They said, “Without the fare increase we would not get the much needed tube update that we are all crying for.”

Sharon Grant, chair of the commuter watchdog London TravelWatch, said the rises were unacceptable. "We are particularly appalled at the 20% rise in single bus fares, and the rise of a single Oyster trip in zone 1," she said. "While the freeze on the price of a weekly Travelcard is welcome, it appears that infrequent, irregular users, such as part-time workers, will be disproportionately punished. It is these people who may well decide not to use public transport, not travel at all, or use their car instead."

Web restriction in China

Government blocked numbers of websites related to human rights. It is because Obama came. All these make me membered the period of Olympic Games. The government did the same thing. They kept restriction on Internet during Beijing Olympic Games has increased heavily compare with other period of time.

Throughout the Olympic Games in Beijing across the country have increased and intensified its repression and control of human rights defenders, including religious people, ethnic minorities, lawyers and journalists. The authorities maintain strict control over information on Internet, many Internet sites blocked. Journalists and Internet users were warned by the authorities. They were prohibited for peaceful expression of their views.

Two weeks before the Olympic Games, the government was established three "protest zone" in Beijing’s park, allowing people to protest. It is too late but glad that China finally have legal areas for speech. However, no indications have shown that any one had received official permission, and carried out protests in protest zone, till now these three areas is still empty. According to Constitution of the People’s Republic of China Article 35, citizens of the People's Republic of China enjoy freedom of speech, of the press, of assembly, of association, of procession and of demonstration. Nevertheless, the liberalization of “protest zone” is still doubtful. The first reason is whether the permission was executed. The application procession of protest might be complicated and long. It is hard to say when the applier could get the permission. The second reason is whether citizens trust the government. Protestor would probably afraid to go to the protest zone, because long repression of government.
More than 20 Chinese journalists have been prohibited of engaging in journalistic activities during the Olympic Games, this figure is more than any other country in the world. About 20,000 accredited journalists plan to Beijing. However, some of them had been denied, because they failed to explain the reasons for visa.

Since January 1, 2007, foreign journalists had released by restriction of interview in China. New temporary regulations had been under way. It gave foreign journalists the permission of doing investigation and interviews outside Beijing. While in the past, all foreign journalists could do report only after authorizing by China’s government. The new regulations outlined the rights of journalists: “to interview organizations or individuals in China, foreign journalists need only to obtain their prior consent.”The ambiguity of the regulations is whether it also applies to Tibet and Xinjiang autonomous regions. The result is by April 2009, “the Foreign Correspondents Club of China (FCCC) had logged more than 50 incidents of police harassing reporters in Tibetan areas.” The interference not only refers to freedom of expression, but also the human rights.

A number of internet websites was blocked during the Olympic Games. “Internet users and journalists were at risk of harassment and imprisonment for addressing politically sensitive topics. Numerous people were detained and put under surveillance in connection with their applying for permission to protest.” When the Olympics Games arrived, the government was so indifferent to the freedom of expression. They blocked and filtered at least 50 websites, including foreign news, human rights, and other websites related to pro-Tibet, according to OpenNet Initiative.

From our correspondent in China

When western people think about China, they often think about cheap products. This is because China products more than half of world’s clothes and small products with low labour costs. These products are sold all over the world. Therefore, China has a nickname as "The factory of the World". However, things have changed in recent years. There are more and more competitors in manufacturing market.

The boom started at the end of the 1980s, following the southern revolution. It is the first time that China opens its door to the world. After that in few years later, foreign visitors, business man eared their first barrels of gold. ‘Made in china’ start from then. Twenty years past, the processing industry is declining. One of the reason is cost of labour is not cheap any more. After that American people become to worry about the price of Christmas tree is rising. Following that, international traders were looking forward to cheaper processing market like Vietnam.

Economic recession happens in the southeast province in China, because of global economic environment. In last year, 50,000 factories closed down. The local government could not live on the rental land and factory. Rural workers prefer working in their own town instead of getting adventure in modern city. The government made a series polices to encourage local employment for example cut down the tax.

Now in southeast part of china, the foreign investment is reducing. Local people are trying to launch their own business. However, most of these small factories still lean upon international markets. Therefore, their devolvement is limited.

The extreme party BNP, does it bother you?

A few days ago, the British National Party leader in the BBC's famous program "questions time”.
Ever questioned the nazis jews, muslims and attack the non-white hatred, homosexuality, for violence to defend the ku Klux far-right leader, how can you sit in front of the microphone to BBC?

British national party is legally registered parties. In June this year the European parliament election million votes, took two seats. From the perspective of election, is the most successful in British history of ultra-right parties.
So, what person, why would such a person have the right support?

British national party was established in 1982, its ethnic policies to the extreme, they won the "new fascist" hat. So, today's supporters are state what person? After the election, European YouGov polling agency launched a 32000 people "Britain's biggest election survey". Survey results for national party supporters painted a picture: male, blue, tabloid readers, the traditional Labour supporters.

Obviously, the national party supporters to immigrants as Britain's biggest problem facing, 87% of people included "the most attention is one of the three questions. However, the survey also found that most of the country's supporters to feel pessimistic outlook, uneasy. Only 19% think "in the next few years, my family and I can have a chance to become better days" and Labour voters 59%, conservative voters 42% optimism for the future.

The survey also found that white "second-class citizens in Britain is very complex. National party among voters think, now white was 77 "unfair discrimination". To my amazement, British society general has up to 40 % of the people hold the same view.
They feel neglected and marginalized, feel working-class whites only can be in society became public ridicule, "cruelty" group. "If someone can I speak, a bit of racial discrimination and how?"

In the past few years, the national party in British votes for continuous rise. Griffin in the BBC, critics say after appearance, he revealed the national party ugly face, but also somebody thinks, griffin was apparent gruffness may cause people to him instead of sympathy.

The extreme party BNP, does it bother you?

New Vegetarianism Group

Vegetarianism used to be simple - its protagonists foreswore the flesh of any dead animal. Today there are "veggies" who eat fish, and people who eat no meat but don't call themselves vegetarians.

Kate Sibley is one example of the more complex definitions of vegetarian these days. She was raised mostly as a vegetarian, but given fish for health reasons. She became an orthodox vegetarian at university but then returned to eating fish later. It's now the only meat that she eats.

Her objection is mainly to the way meat is produced, not to the idea of eating an animal. She uses the term "vegetarian" almost for the sake of convenience. If she is dining with people for the first time, it makes things simpler.

It is clear, however, that meat-free and meat-substitute meals make up more and more of what we eat. The marketers and the activists are dealing with new groups of people, known as meat-avoiders and meat-reducers. Outside those who have a clear philosophical platform for eschewing meat, there are increasing numbers of these people, either cutting down on meat or trying not to eat it where possible, but without necessarily ever calling themselves "vegetarian".

Many people will start by giving up red meat for health reasons, then give up white meat, and so on. Despite initially doing it for non-ethical reasons, these people can then take on the philosophical mantle, says Ms Gellatley.

But despite the health messages about certain kinds of meat, and the arguments over the amount of energy it takes to produce meat, the vast majority in the UK still eat meat. And one-fifth, according to Mintel, like to have meat every day.

Media study (3) - how they report postal strike?

23 October, the second 24-hours strike was keep going. The strike was continuing by delivery and collection staff.

TV station had not found a good story so that there were no features showing on screens. BBC website News & Sport search engine shows 5 pieces of news relevance postal news comparing 9 pieces on 21 Oct. The postal workers were insisting the strike, but the media were appearing less and less interest. Breaking news of that day was Second day of postal strike in North Ireland. And then another report said, “CWU has said another strike will start next week and may last three days.” The website is using its strength to report the latest although it is one sentence news. It is still could be report individually or combine with others news. The continuous news keeps readers refresh webpage frequently. It will rise page view of website.

The follow news is Postal strikes delay 40% of mail. It was updated at 22:48 on 23 Oct when newspapers have to report it tomorrow. It was on the floating news at the bottom of the screen. The website reported it at the first time again. The report said, “The nationwide postal workers' strikes have delayed about 30 million letters, some 40% of a typical day's post, Royal Mail has revealed.” The news seems like a consequence of last three days three report. It gives a clear figure of the losing “40% of mail was delayed”. It means Royal mail dominates more than 90% of the letters market. Showing the announcement by Paul Moffett, Communication Workers' Union (CWU) Suffolk regional secretary, with the interview video. Although the Paul Moffett was not give the figure of the backlog, the video places on that page operates on the mind of the audience. The story concludes the strike’s result more besides the mail has delayed no other helpful solution. There is still none of sides reveal to back to table.

At the second part of the article, it gives some statements about how delayed mail affect people’s life. These reports also shows on Daily Mail. At the same time, Daily Mail found a new story One-man postal service gets on his bike. “As a one-man delivery service, he cycles 50 miles every day to keep his growing number of customers satisfied.” Comparing with other general reports, one-man postal service is a new story. It is fresh and unusual when people talking about mails were out of fashion, when others were keeping report the argument.

In conclusion, facing topical news, almost all types of media were trying to remove their all resource to report a whole latest unusual news story. The media give prominent news a front page or the first news in TV program. To different with others, some media invite expert to analyze the affairs. Another good way is publish appalling pictures or videos. However, in my opinion although they were using attractive method, the most important one should the angle of the report. The angle could be separated into two parts.

Firstly, it is how you treat the story. As mentioned before, I found good stories. First one is on 21 October from BBC website. The story was separated into different part and was updated. The website might be the only media could treat a story like that. The second one is Daily Mail’s story. I choose it because it is unusual. Many readers of Daily Mail are work class. They probably read this story on their way home, on train or bus. The deep analysis cannot catch their attention. They are looking for easy stories. One-man postal service fit their taste.

The Second one is the nature of report. You cannot treat story in bulletin. There is no time for extend. You also cannot fabricate a story from short interview. My point is that choose a correct channel for good stories, like BBC interviewed experts on line and objective analysis for newspaper. Mix these two elements together, a good report was born.

Media study (2) - how they report postal strike?

22 October, the postal strike started in the morning.

BBC kept following the strike’s operation. Correspondents reported the situation of the strike from all parts of the UK. TV is the best way of broadcast movements, because the lively pictures give audiences vision impact. BBC News at One interviewed Divisional Managing Director of TNT Express Stuart Stobie in Warwickshire, to explain how the strike affects TNT. Meanwhile, the journalist in Manchester went into a stamp shop to find out the affection of their business by the strike. Different interviewees bring clearer report angle and keep following the walkout. It fits the taste of mass audiences not the politics or business man. During the report, at the bottom of the screen, the floating news was keeping update.

At night, BBC Two program Newsnight broadcasted a short video. It combines footage of the strike with interviews of Royal Mail postal workers who were not join in the strike. One of them said he worked at that day because he has to pay bills, children’s tuition. If he worked at that day, he would get that day’s money. Very simple answer, no theories, no slogan, but it moves audiences. I think his answer is the real reason of strike.
The website has less advantage of following the strike, although it is BBC official website that could broadcast the video of strike legally. (Nowadays people prefer to visit YouTube for footage taken on a mobile phone.) Therefore, the BBC website turns to report the background of Royal Mail strike in history and gives analysis. News: Origins of the Royal Mail Strike was updated at 12:19. It said, “In 2007, the last national postal strike ended after both sides signed a 14-page agreement…” The website uses its unlimited pages give a clear reason of the strike though reviewing the walkout in 2007. And then, the website analyzed, “the great prize of replacing confrontation with trust between the two sides, seems as far away as ever.”

This objective analysis was proofed by the following news. The website concludes people’s attitude and wrote Postal strike divides commentators. It gives the different voices of commentators. “In the Guardian, Seumas Milne says ‘back in the real world, postal workers might have been thought foolish…’” A former postal worker, Mick Hume said, “…Postal workers deserve better than that.” When the strike was continuing, the website not only updated the latest news, but also looked forward new angles of the story. It might attract more audiences than TV station. On the other hand, the website sets a page for comments named Have you say? including subtitles, such as How is the strike affecting you? and Postal workers views. Just 22 Oct, thousands people made comments on BBC website. It is a peak in three days. Vox pops is keeping the affairs hot.

It is no doubt that the leader of BNP instead postal strike covers the front page of The Times. However, I was little surprised that the story of strike was arranged on page 8. Newspaper is always the slowest one during operating affairs. The other way round, an adequate amount of times give journalists enough time to thinking. The reports of strike on The Times gives a link that point to page 23. It recommends readers to turn to their comments part. Ann Treneman criticized the condemnations between Gordon Brown and David Cameron. She combines the argument with a former story about Parliament’s favorite biscuits. It is more interesting than a political story. Another link of the story is letters to editor. The editor collected two letters and published. This old communication method to show Vox pops seems a bit out of time.

Media study (1) - how they report postal strike?

21 October is the former day of postal strike.

The media was focus on the benefits and the drawbacks of postal strike. The media invited experts to persuade CWU cancel the strike and to analysis the situation. Especially TV station, during their hourly news and other news programs, the presenter connected the expert and Communication Workers Union to attend the online interview. Such as, Royal Mail's Operations Director Paul Tolhurs, David Ward of the Communication Workers Union and so on. Their statements were the focus of that day. The CWU and Royal Mail both try their best to make announcements clearly and correctly. They choose TV station broadcast their position. TV stations use the interview to satisfy the attention of mass. Their arguments went on all day long and no sight shown that will stop. However, the airtime is limited. TV programs were finished during their condemnation. Nearly all reports have no difference and no interaction. They bored audiences. These reports put audiences aside. They don’t aroused audiences.

Besides of these normal reports, I found a significative report updated at 17:40 on BBC website named leaders clash over postal dispute. In my view, it seems an end of long day dispute: if no one took the responsibility to organize a peaceful dispute, the strike would keep on. It broadcasts the condemnation between Gordon Brown and David Cameron at first. It said, “CWU leader Billy Hayes accused Business Secretary Lord Mandelson of working hand in hand with Royal Mail management to sabotage the talks and called him the ‘minister without responsibility’”. The report also gives analysis of the situation. The strength of website is that gives a report more space to imagine even predicate. The nature of report could be an only prognosticate or come former reporter together. Although the predication may not precise, it could attract more audiences. The second benefits of website is the speed of news update. The updated time of this report was the period that all newspapers were placed on the shelf of store and TV station were showing animation and soap opera.

Fortunately, like a respond of former report about condemnation, the CWU said later that day, “a nationwide postal strike will go ahead on Thursday and Friday.” “Dave Ward, CWU: ‘There are external forces… attempting to undermine talks.’” This news was updated at 21:30 on that day. The website integrates an individual breaking news into a full story. Comparing with short news, a full story is more attractive and impressive. About the strike, continuous arguments were losing audiences. The updated news were lack of juicy story. On the other hand, the amount of airtime is limited on TV program. They have no time to tell a whole story. However, the space of the web pages could allow the story to extend. Meanwhile, the website gives useful links relevant the story, such as ‘Royal Mail’s future’ links latest news, background and analysis links expert’s comment. It makes stories luxuriant.

Turn to newspaper’s competition, The highlight of The Lite’s front page is Fears for pig flu patients in post strike; Health chief’s alert over jabs for the at-risk Post strike “bad timing” for vital swine flu jabs. The report gives audiences a new angle about the affect of postal strike. The strike was not only related postal workers, also affects their life. Affecting vaccinations of swine flu is a vivid sample that showing a typical vital package which can not delay. At that time some other TV stations, newspapers or websites focused on how to solve the problem if letters or parcels was delay, their solutions such as online paying or change postal company is useful but not attractive. However, the news of the vaccination was delayed still need to be justified, but the highlight indeed caught people’s eyes.

China is exploring oil all over the world

China is planning to buy as much of the world’s oil as it can.

Sinochem, the Chinese government-controlled oil group, had offered £532m for Emerald Energy, the FTSE 250-listed oil explorer with fields in Syria and Colombia. For Emerald’s founders it meant a multi-million pound payday.

But as the Times newspaper puts it 7th October, the fact that China is becoming a leading actor of natural resource show. The movement will break the balance of Obama’s political leverage. He needs to get momentum for a deal in the US.

Tom Grieder, analyst at IHS Global Insight, said: “The scale of what it has done so far has been breathtaking.”

“The centre of gravity in the energy industry is shifting east,” said Philip Lambert of Lambert Energy, a consultancy. “They know what 1.4 billion people need so they have a clear idea of where they think the oil and gas prices are going.”

Following with the continual fuel store, China, which has just overtaken the US as the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases.

If left unchecked, within 25 years emissions from China will be double those of the combined output of the US, EU, Japan and all other industrialized nations, said Fatih Birol, chief economist of the International Energy Agency (IEA).

The paper said. “In a calculated move, China stole the show at yesterday’s special United Nations summit on climate change with plans to pour billions of dollars into energy-saving technology and nuclear power.”

Compare the benefits and drawbacks, what is certain is that China is fast outgrowing its own limited resources and has given a mandate to its companies to buy them elsewhere.
